Small Cup by Yoshimi Tokuda
HS Code: 6914.90
Diameter: 6.5 cm
Height: 5 cm
The artist actively adopts the almost obsolete technique of urushimaki, and creates works while exploring the unique, deep, and delicate colors that can only be produced by this technique. The lacquer is loosened with turpentine oil and applied to the work. The unique colors and textures are obtained by baking the half-dried lacquer with powdered paint. The unique tone, which is vivid but also has a nuance as if time has passed, speaks to the viewer in a unique way when placed on a table or a shelf.
Yoshimi Tokuda
Born in Nagoya. Studied painting at Musashino Art University in Tokyo. Worked in media and advertising production in Tokyo, but became deeply attracted to ceramics around 1990 and studied again at Tajimi Technical College. Upon graduation, she established STUDIO TOKUDA, which was selected for the Mino Ceramics Eternal Preservation in 2016.Small Cup – 徳田吉美 (Yoshimi Tokuda)
Crafted using the rare and traditional urushimaki technique, this small cup by 徳田吉美 is a study in texture and time. Its unique, delicate hues are achieved through the masterful application of lacquer mixed with turpentine, followed by a careful baking process with powdered pigment, resulting in a finish that feels both vibrant and vintage.
Artistic Details
- Urushimaki Technique: Tokuda actively revives this near-obsolete lacquer-based method to create colors and depths impossible to achieve through standard glazing.
- A Nuanced Palette: The result is a vivid yet weathered tone—a "nuance of passed time"—that brings a contemplative, artistic presence to any tabletop or shelf.
- Recognized Craftsmanship: Founded in 1990, STUDIO TOKUDA is a respected voice in contemporary ceramics, with works selected for the Mino Ceramics Eternal Preservation.
